CancerCare is set to host its 15th Annual Lung Cancer Walk for Hope at the Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course, 1 Southwoods Road in Woodbury, on Sunday, Nov. 5. The Lung Cancer Walk for Hope raises critical funds to support CancerCare’s free, professional services provided to anyone affected by cancer.

Walkers of all ages are welcome to participate. The event kicks off with an opening ceremony at 9 a.m., and the walk starts at 9:30 a.m. Registration and check in begin at 8 a.m. Both individuals and teams can register in advance at www.cancercare.org/lungcancerwalk.

This community-based event brings together friends and families to walk in memory of those they have lost to lung cancer, celebrate survivors and support those who are currently facing a lung cancer diagnosis.

Laura MacArthur, a resident of Suffolk, will be joining the Lung Cancer Walk for Hope for the seventh time this year. MacArthur benefited from CancerCare’s individual counselling services after her mother, a non-smoker, passed away from lung cancer at age 61. Now, she wants to help others who are coping with the loss of a loved one to lung cancer.

“I walk to honor my parents who both died because of lung cancer,” she said. “I walk to raise money for individuals or families to have the support they need, to be able to talk to someone and vent or ask questions. CancerCare was there for me when I needed to talk. I hope the money I am able to raise will help someone else in need.”

CancerCare’s Syosset office hosts the organization’s CancerCare’s Lung Cancer Support Program, which provides free counseling to patients, loved ones and caregivers affected by lung cancer.

“For 15 years, the Lung Cancer Walk for Hope has been an essential part of sustaining the CancerCare Lung Cancer Support Program,” said Winfield Boerckel, MBA, LCSW-R, Director of Social Services for the Long Island office. “We are deeply grateful to our Long Island community for their hard work and commitment in support of our organization, and look forward to joining them on November 5 to once again honor and remember those affected by lung cancer.”

Registration fees are a $35 minimum donation per adult (13 and older) through Nov. 1 and $40 minimum from November 2 through the event day; $20 minimum donation per student (ages 13-22); or $10 for children under the age of 12. Awards will be presented to the top individual and team fundraisers. The event will be held rain or shine.

CancerCare thanks the following event sponsors and community partners: Ices for Andrea, Harborside Press, Teva Oncology, Genentech, Morgan Stanley, NYU Winthrop Hospital, K-Deer, Anton Media Group, Pennysaver, WBAB & WBLI, Hint Water, Holiday Inn, Panera Bread, and a special thank you to Supervisor John Saladino and the Town of Oyster Bay.
