Winter Gardening Seminars

Even though it’s winter, gardening is still front of mind for those with a green thumb. Beginning this month, Hicks Nurseries comes to the rescue with a series of winter gardening seminars.

Crazy for Orchids? If you were ever tempted to buy an orchid but didn’t think you’d know how to care for it, the seminar on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 1 p.m. is for you. You’ll learn about all the different types of orchids and what it takes to keep them thriving and flowering. There will also be a free orchid potting demonstration in the Main Greenhouse on Saturday, Jan. 17, and Sunday, Jan. 18.

Pruning Lesson. On Saturday, Jan. 24, at 10 a.m., learn everything you need to know about how to prune trees and shrubs, including hydrangea, screening plants and more, on Long Island.
Creating Terrariums and Miniature Gardens. Watch and learn as Hicks’ staff demonstrate the art of terrarium and miniature garden making on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Impatiens Replacements Update. The seminar on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 10 a.m. will explain the many annual varieties, colors, sizes and combinations Hicks will carry in 2015, and will cover why impatiens are still not the best choice for your garden.


It’s Hard to Kill Houseplants. On Saturday, Jan. 31, at 1 p.m., the seminar will explore 10 houseplants that are easy to care for. The lecture will focus on everything you need to know, from how and when to water and fertilize to light requirements and when to pot. Caring for houseplants is easier than you think and they provide amazing health benefits, too.

Houseplant and Cactus Repotting. There will be a free houseplant and cactus repotting demonstration in the Main Greenhouse on Saturday, Jan. 31 and Sunday, Feb. 1.
