On Friday, July 18, Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts (www.usdan.com), Long Island’s premier arts day camp, will present the 11th Anniversary edition (the largest ever) of its unique and fun one-day arts camp experience for adults, Usdan University. The program attracts moms and dads whose tykes attend Usdan as well as adults across a whole range of interests and several states and will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It was created after requests from alumni to return to the center, and from parents wanting “to be 13 again,” and “to have something for me, too.”
The day begins with a wide variety of arts classes, including organic gardening and cooking; digital photography; painting; hand building ceramics, potter’s wheel ceramics; Broadway jazz dance and musical theater performance. Morning classes will be followed by a lunch catered by Panera Bread, and a concert in the on-site, 1,000-seat McKinley Amphitheater. Afternoon recreation which can include chorus, a nature walk, archery or a campus tour will also be available to participants. An optional swim in Usdan’s Olympic-sized pools, from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. will also be available.
Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts (www.usdan.com), is now in its 47th season. Alumni include actors Natalie Portman, Olivia Thirlby and Jackie Hoffman, and singers Jane Monheit and Mariah Carey. It has introduced the arts to more than 60,000 Tri-State Area children since its founding in 1968. The Usdan Center is located on 185 Colonial Springs Rd. in Wheatley Heights (Huntington).
