The Nassau County Police Department Public Information Office reported that a swan was rescued on Wednesday, Sept. 2, at 10:25 a.m. in Merrick.
According to police, a 5-year-old girl who was near her residence on Lake End Road and Merrick Avenue, heard a strange noise coming from a storm drain nearby. She approached the storm drain and discovered that a swan was trapped inside. She immediately told her father who then contacted police.
Officers from the Seventh Precinct responded and saw that the swan was trapped inside the drain and appeared to be in distress. Officers assessed the situation and notified the Emergency Service Unit (ESU) to respond. Officers were aware of two New York State-licensed wildlife rehabilitators in the area and had them assist in the rescue.
ESU officers were able to lift the storm drain cover while the rehabilitators safely removed the swan.
The swan was removed and is currently under evaluation, but appears to be uninjured.
