Sewanhaka Cosmetologists Get Stylish For St. JudeThe cosmetology program at Sewanhaka Central High School District offered salon services after school on Feb. 15 to raise money for the nonprofit organization St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

The students, under the supervision of their teachers Maryanne Contarino, Ta Juana Portier, Theresa Strumpf, Grace Jennings and Olimpia Nicholls, offered professional services such as haircuts, blow dry styling, hair color, highlights and manicures. Both classroom salons were busy taking care of more than 40 clients that consisted of friends, family members, teachers and community residents.

Students were highly motivated to make this fundraiser a success, distributing flyers to each of the high schools within the district. They also distributed flyers to their family, neighbors and friends. Through their efforts to promote the program and service to so many people in a short amount of time, they raised more than $865 for the organization.

The students in the career and technical education programs are always encouraged to become involved in various projects that give back to the community. This fundraiser was the perfect opportunity for them to work in a true salon situation and have all donations go to such a remarkable cause.
