Series Of MLK, Jr. Celebrations Planned

Martin Luther King, Jr.Nassau County will observe the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a weekend of programs in celebration of his life. The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration Committee of Nassau County Inc. and the Nassau County Commission of Human Rights has planned two events that pay tribute to the leader of the American Civil Rights Movement who was assassinated on April 4, 1968.

An ecumenical interfaith service is planned for Sunday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m. at the Zion Cathedral Church of God in Christ, located at 312 Grand Ave. in Freeport. There will be a free will offering. Additional information is available by contacting Reverend Phillip Elliott at 516-572-1933.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 31st Annual Scholarship Awards Luncheon will be held on Monday, Jan. 18, at 11:30 a.m. at the Marriott Hotel, 101 James Doolittle Blvd. in Uniondale. Mangano will serve as honorary chairperson for the event.

Proceeds from all weekend events will benefit the MLK Committee Scholarship Fund assisting local high school seniors seeking higher education. The purchase price of a luncheon ticket is $75.
