Scouts_080316AAs part of their chosen tasks for earning the Girl Scout Bronze Award, Junior Scouts Jessica, Sophia and Kyshiya of Stewart Manor Troop 1127 spent the morning with Book Fairies (www.thebookfairies.org) of Freeport to help sort hundreds of donated books for children in need. The Troop partnered with Astoria Bank (www.astoriabank.com) of Floral Park (the Covert Avenue and Jericho Turnpike locations) to host a book drive in the weeks ahead of their book sorting event.

Community members generously donated hundreds of books for underprivileged children that were then brought to the Book Fairies’ warehouse in Freeport. Other 4th- and 5th-grade Scouts in the Troop chose to participate in reading sessions with the kindergartens at their school. The Scouts made posters, bookmarks and other campaign materials promoting literacy, which they shared with their classmates, teachers and staff.
