To celebrate February as National Children’s Dental Health Month, ProHealth Dental will offer free oral health screenings for kids during the week of Feb. 17-22, 2020. Appointments are required for this complimentary service.

The free oral health screenings include a visual examination of the teeth. Parents or guardians can call 855-PHD-CARE/718-DENTIST to make an appointment for their child.

ProHealth Dental offices offering the free screenings are:

  • 163-45 Cross Bay Blvd, Howard Beach, NY 11414
  • 35 Gerard Street, Huntington, NY 11743
  • 50-11 Vernon Boulevard, Long Island City, New York 11101

National Children’s Dental Health Month brings together dedicated dental and healthcare professionals to help promote the benefits of good oral health to children, their caregivers, teachers and many others.

“The first dental visit should occur when the baby’s first tooth appears but no later than the child’s first birthday” said Dr. Sandra Chung, a Pediatric Dentist for ProHEALTH Dental. “However, many children do not visit the dentist until well after the time recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association. Parents may be unaware of the dental health timeline, or they may be reluctant to bring their child for fear of how their child will behave—especially if parents are harboring their own apprehensions about the dentist.”

In order to keep your child’s teeth clean:

  • Brush teeth and tongue twice a day and floss once a day in order to keep teeth and gums healthy.
  • Always choose a child size soft bristle toothbrush. Replace the toothbrush every 3 months or sooner if the bristles are frayed. Throw away the toothbrush after your child recovers from a cold or flu.
  • For children under the age of three, use no more than a smear or grain-of-rice-size amount of fluoride toothpaste.
  • For children three to six, use no more than a pea size amount of fluoride toothpaste.
  • Parents should supervise and assist with brushing until their child can tie their own shoe lace.

“As a working mom, I understand the challenges parents face when trying to maintain their child’s oral hygiene,” said Dr. Chung. “It can be a daily struggle getting their child to brush. Or on a busy day you might forget to remind your child to brush and he or she is already out the door or fast asleep. Hopefully, some of these techniques will help to reinforce good oral hygiene habits while making brushing and flossing fun for the entire family.”
