Phony Gas Leak Story Gets Burglar in the Door in Herricks.

Detectives are investigating a burglary that occurred in Herricks at 12:40 p.m. on June 20.

According to police, an unknown male, wearing a yellow work vest and a yellow construction hat knocked on the front door of a 79 year-old female victim on Pine Street in Herricks. The subject allegedly told the victim he was from National Grid, there was a gas explosion, and he needed to come into the house and check the water for a gas leak. The victim was told to turn on the faucet in the kitchen while the subject went alone into a bathroom near the master bedroom. The subject was in the home for approximately twenty minutes, and left without incident. Shortly after, the victim discovered assorted gold jewelry missing from her jewelry box.
