North Patchogue Man Arrested for Hit and Run

Detectives are investigating a hit-and-run accident in which a cyclist was
seriously injured in Medford, in the early morning of July 17.

According to police, the victim was riding his bicycle westbound on the eastbound shoulder in front of 344 Jamaica Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle that was traveling eastbound at 6:24 a.m. The suspect fled the scene in the vehicle, which was described as a 2006 Honda.

After an investigation, detectives arrested John Lorio, 19, of North Patchogue, at approximately 3:30 p.m. the same day. A 2006 Honda was impounded. The victim, who has not been identified, was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital in East Patchogue.

Lorio was charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving serious injury. He will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on June 18.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact homicide detectives at 631=854-8552. All calls will remain confidential.
