Georgia Peaches Creative Cups
Joelle Araujo handpainted peaches on this Creative Cups entry in honor of her grandmother, Irma Small.

Elmont resident Joelle Araujo’s handpainted work of art “Georgia Peaches” will be on display at the Ruth S. Harley University Center Gallery at Adelphi University from March 5 through 12. “Georgia Peaches” is one of 14 works that have been selected from 137 original creations that were submitted in support of Creative Cups, an art fundraiser of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program.

To make their Creative Cups, people embellished an ordinary bra to fit with a story they wanted to tell. Araujo’s inspiration for her bra is her grandmother, Irma Small, a breast cancer survivor who was diagnosed at age 59 through early detection and has been cancer free for more than 20 years.

She said, “My grandparents have lived in Georgia my entire life and any time I have a thought of my grandparents, I think of the peach state.”

She wanted to create images that displayed the beautiful hues of peaches using acrylic paint. “These peaches are my interpretation of when I think of Georgia,” Araujo said. “This bra was made with love in celebration of my grandmother’s survivorship.”

“Georgia Peaches” and the 136 other Creative Cups will be auctioned at a gala event at Adelphi University ballroom in Garden City on Thursday, March 16. To date, sponsors include Goldman Sachs Gives, The Leviton Foundation Inc. and Digital Graphic Imagery.
