Local Women Honored For Community Service
Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages’ 2017 Women of Distinction

On Sunday, March 12, more than 300 community members celebrated Women’s History Month during New York State Assemblywoman Michaelle C. Solages’ Annual Women of Distinction Awards Luncheon at the Stewart Manor Country Club. This year’s luncheon recognized 14 women who have positively empowered the 22nd Assembly District.

“New York has had the privilege of being home to many fearless women—trailblazers, such as Susan B. Anthony and Shirley Chisholm, who refused to accept the restrictions placed on them and tore down barriers to equality,” said Solages. “The Women of Distinction Luncheon is a great opportunity for the community to come together and acknowledge a truly exceptional group of women.”

The ceremony opened with the national anthem and presenting of the American flag by local Girl Scout Troop 1127. Narmeen Choudhury of WPIX11 News was the mistress of ceremonies and welcomed the numerous community guests in attendance. The program included remarks by New York State Commissioner of Education MaryEllen Elia and Dr. Isma Chaudhry, the first female president of the Long Island Islamic Center. The invocation and benediction was cited by Reverend Abigail Murphy of Saint Elisabeth’s Episcopal Church in Floral Park.

This year’s local honorees included; Anna Christ, Cindy Brown, Debbie Meyhfort, Joan Bernard, Dr. Marie J. Bernard, Generia Ocampo, Icela Fischthal, Janet Mahabir, Jennifer Whyte, Joanne Antun, Aldelys Loveras, Nadia Holubnyczyj-Ortiz and Nkenge Gilliam.
