Family & Children’s Association (FCA) is proud to have been chosen as IKEA Long Island’s charity of choice for 2017. Having supported FCA in the past, IKEA Long Island’s staff’s familiarity with the agency began to spread through the different departments. When IKEA’s Operations Manager, Greg Murano, learned about FCA’s 24-hour emergency homeless and runaway youth shelter called Nassau Haven, he decided to personally visit the home.

Nassau Haven is a 12 bed co-ed emergency shelter, providing short-term voluntary housing, case management and respite services to runaway and homeless youth in Nassau County. Since 1982, Nassau Haven has served countless Long Island youth ages 10 to 20.

Murano said of his experience at Nassau Haven, “Walking through Nassau Haven, it was hard not to tear up, thinking of the kids who come here and the chaotic world they come from. At IKEA we feel that kids are the most important people in the world. To help create an even safer, more welcoming, colorful space for these kids is an absolute privilege…We will always stay connected to FCA.”

FCA President and CEO, Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, said of IKEA’s generous giving, “The Haven is such an important resource for runaway and homeless kids on Long Island and we are thankful that IKEA has stepped-up to help in such a significant way. Government funding hasn’t kept pace with the needs in Nassau County and donations such as these help us keep our doors open and help our most vulnerable young people get back on their feet.”

IKEA generously donated comforters, duvet sets, pillows, mattresses, sheets, towels, custom made curtains, furniture, storage containers, wall art and even an outdoor seating area. The goal of this donation was to provide layout and home furnishing expertise to ensure Nassau Haven is not only a safe, but beautiful place.
