Helping fight diabetes can be as simple as shooting pool or playing some arcade games on March 4, as Carnival for a Cure returns to the Dave & Busters at The Mall at the Source in Westbury.

The annual event featuring a family day of amusement benefits the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI), which is dedicated to curing diabetes. Adults, teens, tweens and children of all ages can play the latest arcade games, try their skill at bowling, shoot pool, bounce on inflatables and win prizes.

Dara Melnick, diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 8, knows the importance of this event for families affected by the disease.

“On a daily basis either as parents of children with diabetes or adults with diabetes, we focus on injections, meals, snacks, finger pricks and the many other elements of this disease, and it’s exhausting,” said Melnick, an event co-chair, along with Edra Tepper and Iris Feldman. “A chronic disease forces you to grow up quickly, and we often overlook the importance of just having fun. That’s what Carnival for a Cure is all about.”

Each year, this family-friendly event attracts hundreds and is a wonderful opportunity for all to partake in the fun festivities as well as win some great prizes like a Free Slam Dunk Kids’ Party for 10 kids at Dave & Busters; Apple iPad Air; and an Apple Watch Sport.

Attendees will also enjoy a lunch along with the crowd favorite of Cold Stone Creamery Ice Cream for dessert. Little ones will also enjoy an interactive musical performance by Darlene Graham.

“This is a great event where we can get together and be ‘normal.’ It is kids being kids, parents being parents and families having fun,” Melnick said. “There is something for everyone at Carnival for a Cure.”

Tickets are $250 for a family of four. The event runs from 1 to 4 p.m.
