Danny Green of the San Antonio Spurs will be holding a youth basketball camp at Floral Park High School from Monday, July 7 through Thursday, July 10.
The camp is part of the third annual Team Green Basketball Skills Camp. It is open to boys and girls from kindergarten all the way though high school. Originally from North Babylon, Green won an NCAA Championship with the University of North Carolina in 2009. Just a few weeks ago, he and the San Antonio Spurs beat LeBron James and the Miami Heat to capture his first NBA title, and the Spurs fifth overall. Green isn’t the only one basking in the moment.
The Spurs fell to the Heat in the 2013 NBA Championship, so revenge felt good for the Spurs. ““If (the Spurs) were to face anybody else in the finals, it would have been nice, but not as nice,” Green’s father and CEO of Team Green, Danny Green Sr., said. “It is a fairytale come true.” Now, the Green family is returning to Long Island.
“I’m really excited to host a camp in Floral Park. I’m starting to build a strong relationship with Floral Park, from hosting a successful camp there the past few years and playing in the Malone Mulhall Benefit Game in the past, it’s a great town to work with,” Danny Green Jr. said in a press release.
While the camp is for basketball, the Greens want the campers to learn more than just the game. “I want (the campers) to understand that anything is possible,” Green Sr. said. “To come from a small community on Long Island and make it to the highest level.”
The camp will go for four days this week in Floral Park, then two more sessions will be held in North Babylon at the end of July. For Green Sr, the camps are about the campers learning from the best. “We try to offer quality,” he said. “It’s great to know as a parent that you can send your kid to a safe environment. “
Green Sr. also emphasized one issue that has been debated many times in recent months. “For us, it’s important to know that you are a student-athlete,” he said. Green Sr. added that he wants the campers to know, “What it’s like to be a good teammate,” and “how to be a good human being.”
There are still spots available in the Floral Park camps. For more information, visit teamgreenba.com
