Recently, My Long Island TV (MyLITV) hosted its biennial My Long Island TV Outstanding Stories Award show at the Garden City Lord & Taylor location. Community activist and respected video journalist Waldo Cabrera, the creator of the My Long Island TV news magazine for Verizon FIOS1 back in 2009, was the evening’s host.
With so many positive and uplifting stories at the heart of these submissions, Cabrera was thrilled with the end result, particularly given how the evening allowed for event attendees to rub shoulders with a room full of community-conscious people while showcasing the talents of some local youth from Central Islip and Nassau Community College. The event also served as a fundraiser for the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island to which Lord & Taylor donated 5 percent of any purchases made that evening by MyLITV supporters.
“It was fantastic to be in the presence of so many Long Islanders that care so deeply about our towns. While these leaders were the ones being honored, the real winners are the people in their community,” Cabrera explained.
Out of 1,100 stories MyLITV covered, 545 nominees were picked for 17 categories. The following were the evening’s winners:
