Mastodon_300x225For a night dedicated to mischief and mayhem, who better than hard rock juggernauts Mastodon to tear the roof off of the Paramount Theater in Huntington?

On the most horrifying of holidays, this Halloween, the Georgia-based metal band will put the scare in Long Island locals with a bone-rattling performance and special guests, including French death-metal group Gojira and Norwegian rock outfit Kvelertak.

“It just kind of happened to be that we booked a show [on Halloween],” said Mastodon guitarist Bill Kelliher. “But, I couldn’t think of a better place to be than in New York.”

According to Kelliher, Halloween is always a special occasion for the band… so much so, that they even named one of their latest songs after it. To get into the holiday spirit, Kelliher said the band typically dresses up and performs in costume. One year, he said, he tied his hair up and came out on stage as “Star Wars” heroine Princess Leah, while one of his fellow bandmates came dressed as “King Neil Diamond”—a cross between black metal musician King Diamond and singer-songwriter Neil Diamond.

Mastodon_-_once_more_'round_the_sunStill undecided on what to wear, the band will be heading to Long Island as part of their North American tour in support of their most recent album, Once More ‘Round the Sun. Released in June, the album debuted at the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Top Rock album charts and No. 6 on Billboard’s Top 200 albums chart.

“Every record we get a little more time to contemplate [what goes into it],” Kelliher said. “New ideas come to you here and there… but we don’t know what we’re going to get until we’re actually in the studio.”

First making waves with the release of their 2004 album Leviathan, Mastodon struck it big in 2006, with the release of their third studio album Blood Mountain, which landed them in the top 10 among Rolling Stone Magazine’s Top 50 Albums of 2006.

Now, nearly eight years since Blood Mountain, the band continues to look for new ways to step up their game.

“I feel you grow in a year, two years’ time. When we’ve toured, each band kind of rubs off on us differently,” Kelliher added. “Jamming with other dudes seeps into the way we write.”

Joined by fellow headbangers Gojira and Kvelertak, Kelliher said that their time on the road has brought the bands closer together, calling the tour “a big metal love fest.”

“It’s been so much fun,” Kelliher said. “We’re like a machine… all firing on all cylinders.”

Come join “the big metal love fest” on Oct. 31, at The Paramount, 370 New York Ave. in Huntington. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $29-$60. For tickets and more information visit ticketmaster.com.
