Man Lands Plane on Sunrise Highway near Exit 61

Police responded to calls reporting a plane had landed on the median of Sunrise Highway in East Moriches at 1:31 p.m. on July 10.

A single-engine ultralight Challenger plane took off from Lufker/Spadaro Airport in East Moriches at approximately 1:30 p.m. on July 10. One minute after takeoff, the plane experienced engine trouble. According to detectives, Frank Fierro, the pilot, attempted to return to the airport, but he realized the plane could not make it back and decided to land on the median of Sunrise Highway near exit 61 in East Moriches.

Highway patrol and police officers assisted airport personnel to tow the plane back to the airport. There were no injuries and no damage to the plane.
