Man Critically Injured In 4-Car Crash

Suffolk County Police Fourth Squad detectives are investigating a four-vehicle crash that critically injured a man in Hauppauge on the morning of August 14.

Anthony Barbato was driving a black 2007 Dodge pickup truck eastbound on Veterans Memorial Highway at 7:13 a.m. when his vehicle struck a blue 2007 Dodge pickup truck and a Subaru Legacy before one of those vehicles struck a Nissan Pathfinder, according to police. The three vehicles were stopped at the traffic light at the intersection of New Highway.

The driver of the blue 2007 Dodge, John Purstell, 53, of East Northport, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was listed in critical condition. The 54-year-old female driver of the Subaru Legacy, the 41-year-old female driver of the Nissan and Barbato were all transported to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown for minor injuries.

Following a preliminary investigation, it appears sun glare was a contributing factor. The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Fourth Squad detectives at 631-854-8452.
