The Cradle of Aviation Museum and Education Center is hosting a lecture and book signing with Dave Baranek on Thursday, May 7 at 7 p.m. Baranek’s book Topgun Days explains what it is like to be a Naval Flight Officer in the mighty, Grumman manufactured F-14 Tomcat.
Baranek enjoyed a 20-year career in the U. S. Navy. When he joined the Navy he had his sights on flying Navy jets, but his eyesight deteriorated and instead of becoming a pilot, he became a radar intercept officer (RIO). He received his call sign “Bio,” short for bionic, which rhymes with Baranek.
While serving as a Top Gun air-to-air combat instructor in 1985, he flew aerial sequences used in the film Top Gun starring Tom Cruise. He also served as a dialogue advisor on the project.
Come and hear Baranek talk about his days in the F-14 cockpit as he describes dogfighting and carrier operations, which include a heart-stopping mishap and ejection. He describes his Hollywood experiences, which include the behind-the-scenes story of one of America’s favorite movies, Top Gun. Baranek’s book takes you from the “catapult shot to the red carpet.”
This lecture is free, but reservations are required. To register, call 516-572-4066. Refreshments will be served during the book signing. Seating is limited.
