Long Island Community Hospital announced Friday that the Knapp Family COVID-19 Health Crisis Challenge has awarded a $500,000 matching grant made possible by the Knapp-Swezey Foundation, Island Outreach Foundation and Gardener Foundation to help raise vital funding for the community hospital in their fight against COVID-19.

“I’m extremely grateful and proud to announce this new initiative from the Knapp Family, valued members of our LI Community Hospital family, that will greatly enhance our ability to fight COVID-19 right here in our community,” said Richard T. Margulis, President and Chief Executive Officer at LI Community Hospital.

The Knapp Family will match every donation, dollar for dollar up to $500,000 to directly purchase precious personal protective equipment (PPE), supplies, equipment and other items necessary to keep our healthcare professionals safe during this pandemic. These purchases are ongoing and include masks, gowns, eyewear and other protective gear in high demand.

“Our families’ collaborative battle cry is ‘if not now, when?’ Your donations are protecting those who are saving lives in our community.  People you know; your family members, friends and acquaintances.  No one is immune from this horrific virus and those on the front lines are in the thick of it,” said Michele Knapp, Board Member at LI Community Hospital and Chair of the Knapp Family COVID-19 Health Crisis Challenge. “If we do not protect our hospital workers now, sending nurses and doctors without the appropriate armor, we will not be able to respond with confidence to the surge we know is coming.  We have witnessed the devastation unfold over the past couple of weeks in our New York City hospitals.  The wave is coming and it is unavoidable. Please join with us to make a difference now, save lives now, the hour of need is now.”

“The Knapp family’s most recent commitment is a testament to their steadfast support of our hospital. We have already seen an outpouring of support from our community and the launch of this campaign will most certainly propel our fundraising efforts,” said Rachel E. Schnabl, Vice President and Chief Development Officer at LI Community Hospital. Mrs. Schnabl continued, “Time is of the essence and the Knapp Family COVID-19 Health Crisis Challenge campaign will need to be completed in record time so we can continue to provide our healthcare heroes with the vital supplies they so desperately need.”

With the number of COVID-19 cases in Suffolk County surpassing 15,000 and growing, LI Community Hospital has transformed the hospital to meet increased demand, including the installation of a forward triage area to screen for potentially infected patients before they enter the facility. They have also expanded the capacity of the hospital and intensive care beds with additional ventilators have been placed in specialized areas. In response to the recent influx of COVID-19 patients over the past few weeks, the entire hospital staff is working diligently to meet the needs of vulnerable patients while protecting front-line healthcare professionals.

“In the midst of this crisis, it’s truly overwhelming to see that humanity and generosity shines through. Now, more than ever, we need the support of our community and our community has responded,” said Mr. Margulis.
