Hicksville American Legion Honors Heroic First Responders

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson, along with Nassau County Legislator Laura Schaefer and Nassau County Legislator Rose Marie Walker, recently joined with the Charles Wagner Post 241 of the American Legion in Hicksville to recognize the heroism and professionalism of several first responders in the surrounding area at the Legion’s Annual Awards Night.

Honorees included Captain Christopher Moskos II of the Heavy Rescue Company 8 Hicksville Fire Department and Lieutenant Andrew Niemczyk of the Citizens Engine Company 3 Hicksville Fire Department who aided in the rescue of a 90-year-old woman who was exposed to heat and smoke; Lieutenant Christina Ovale of the Westbury Fire Department; 2nd Precinct Police Nassau County Police Officers Frank Bokrosh and James Austen who located a man suspected of stealing $18,000 worth of jewelry from the Broadway Mall; and 3rd Precinct Nassau County Police Officers John Palmese and Christopher Accordino who saved a homeowner from a house fire.

Also recognized was World War II Veteran Corporal Cliff Doering for his 50 years of service and commitment to the betterment of veterans in the community.

“I’m honored to be in the presence of so many hometown heroes tonight,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “Every day we get to enjoy the safety and beauty of our wonderful Town thanks to you, and all of our first responders, who go above and beyond the call of duty to keep our residents safe.”
