Guitar Extravaganza In Dix Hills

guitar extravaganzaThe Dix Hills Performing Arts Center presents: A Guitar Extravaganza Tribute to the Great Jazz Clubs & the Musicians who Jammed There, Thursday, May 8th at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.

The Five Towns College Guitar Extravaganza concert is designed to recreate the excitement, musicianship and atmosphere of the greatest Jazz clubs from the classic Jazz era. The evening will include surprise guests, jam session performances, and a multimedia presentation of never-before seen photographs depicting Jazz greats at work in their element.

Patrons can expect to relive great moments from the careers of legendary Jazz performers such as “Symphony Sid”, Theloneous Monk, Johnny Smith, Django Rheinhardt, Wes Montgomery and many more; as students, teachers and special guests step up to play Jazz favorites.

“From the Hot Club of France to Birdland on 52nd Street to the Cotton Club up in Harlem, live spontaneous Jazz performances have lit a fire under American popular music that still burns today,” said Sandy Hinden, executive director of the Center. “Today, we can look back on the recordings that came from this, but that moment of live inception is what we’re trying to recreate here, the improvisation as musicians jammed and ultimately created some of the most legendary music ever recorded.”

Five Towns College Music Professor Peter Rogine will direct the performance that promises to take the audience on a wild musical ride. After the show, there will be a seminar on guitar care and maintenance with Briggs Guitar Shop, as well as an after-hours “Meet the Artists” reception in the College’s Upbeat Café where performers and audience members can mingle.
