LICM’s new exhibit, Sonic Sensation, focuses visitors’ attention on the important details in the sounds that surround us every day. Grownups have a chance to explore their listening and sharing skills in LICM’s monthly “Kid Chat” workshop, where grownups can share their experiences and challenges of caring for children.

stART (Story + Art)

Tuesday, March 12 and Thursday, March 14 from 11:30 a.m. to noon

This week, read Hooray for St. Patrick’s Day! by Joan Holub. Learn about the many fun ways to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day from food, to crafts, to parades. After the story create a silly leprechaun hat to wear home.

Ages: 3-5. Fee: $4 with museum admission ($3 LICM members).

Merry-Go-Round

Tuesday, March 12 through Friday, March 15 from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

Make your very own carousel as we get ready for spring and the first ride of the season. Take a seat and decorate your own paper horse and spin it around. All ages. Free with museum admission.

Kid Chat

Wednesday, March 13, 10:15 a.m.

Join in guided conversation where mothers and other caregivers can have open dialogue and socialize with one another as their child plays in the TotSpot area. Space is limited to facilitate conversation flow. This month’s topic: “It Takes a Village: Navigating Relationships with Extended Family, Babysitters and Neighbors.”

Pre-registration to this free event is available to Premium Members only. Online registration ends 9:45 a.m. on the day of the event. Remaining tickets are available to all visitors at the box office the day of the event.

Music and Movement

Wednesday, March 13, 11:30 a.m. to noon

In the Kitchen

Friday, March 15, 11:30 a.m. to noon

Little chefs use real cooking tools (with some help from adults) to make easy, yummy, kid-friendly snacks. As they make their treat, kids gain experience measuring ingredients and following directions. This week’s recipe is Funfetti Pancakes.

Ages: 3-5. Fee: $5 with museum admission ($4 LICM members).

An Itsy Bitsy Spider

Saturday, March 16 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Come celebrate National Save a Spider Day. Learn all about these amazing arachnids and meet the LICM’s very own Rose Hair Tarantula, Rosie. Then create your own climbing spider craft to take home.

Ages: 3 and up. Free with museum admission.

Messy Afternoons

Saturday, March 16 and Sunday, March 17 from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Get up to your elbows in oobleck, clean mud and slime and join for the type of artistic activities that everyone loves, but not one likes to clean-up after.

Ages: 18 months to 4 years. Free with museum admission.

Traveling Exhibit: Sonic Sensation

Through Sunday, May 5

The newest LICM traveling exhibit offers children the opportunity to see, feel and hear sound. Visitors will experience our sonic world while exploring 14 interactive learning stations. Children will discover key listening skills through the science of sound and hearing.

Test your lung power in the Scream Chamber, create your own movie soundtrack and conduct an orchestra with your whole body. You’ll also be able to learn about the anatomy and physics of how we hear, explore decibels, amplitude, pitch and sound waves, find hidden “animals” in kitchen cupboards by listening (no peeking!) and discover ways you can protect your hearing. Sciencenter of Ithaca, New York developed Sonic Sensation. All ages. Free with museum admission.

The Long Island Children’s Museum is located at 11 Davis Ave., Garden City, NY. For more information, visit www.licm.org or call 516-224-5800.
