Irish Leaders In The Alcohol Recovery Movement
Not well known but historically true is the role of Irish Americans in the alcohol recovery movement. Dr. Christopher M. Finan will appear at the Irish Cultural Society’s meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 13 to speak about the leaders in America who followed Father Theobald Mathew’s inspirational message about the hope of recovery from alcohol addiction. Finan is the author of Drunks: An American History, which will be available at the meeting from the author.
He earned his PhD in American history from Columbia University and is the author of Alfred E. Smith: The Happy Warrior and From the Palmer Raids to the Patriot Act: A History of the Fight for Free Speech in America. Finan is the executive director the National Coalition against Censorship and the membership director of the New York Irish History Roundtable. The society’s first meeting of its new season brings a scholar and an important subject to the stage of the Garden City Library.
The society will meet at 7:30 p.m. at the Garden City Library, 60 Seventh St, across the street from the Garden City Hotel. The meeting is free and open to the public.
