Now in its Mark VIII lineup, (eight different versions of the band), Deep Purple has been relatively stable since Ritchie Blackmore’s 1993 mid-tour departure from the band. Local hero Joe Satriani filled in and while he turned down the offer to join Purple due to prior commitments, guitar god Steve Morse was recruited and has been a mainstay in the group for two decades. With the only change being the retirement of since-deceased founding member Jon Lord in 2002, (who was replaced by veteran keyboardist Don Airey), Purple has soldiered on rounded out by vocalist Ian Gillan, bassist Roger Glover and original drummer Ian Paice. Still recording, Mark VIII Purple released last year’s Bob Ezrin-produced Now What?!, to fairly positive reviews.
