Quite the double play of grey beards playing out at the Suffolk Theater this weekend. Start with Jersey bar band fare and you wind up with Dead-flavored manna to sup on. Southside Johnny starts at 8 p.m. while Robert Hunter goes on at 7:30 p.m. The door, bar and restaurant opens at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and at 6 p.m. on Sunday for the Hunter show.
Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes
$45, $39, $35
As much a fixture of the Jersey bar-band scene as longtime buddy Bruce Springsteen, Southside Johnny is one of those artists who always seems to be locally playing one place or another throughout the calendar year. This of course makes Southside Johnny and his Asbury Jukes one of the music industry’s tightest live acts highlighted by the fact that this crew has a deep and extensive canon to pull from.
The only non-performing member of a band to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Robert Hunter is best known for his work collaborating with late Grateful Dead founding member Jerry Garcia. Hunter’s lyrical prowess has also found him working with Bob Dylan, Bruce Hornsby, Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos, Mickey Hart and Jim Lauderdale.
