Burglars Use Gas Leak Story to Gain Entry to House in Westbury

Detectives are investigating a crime known as a residential deception burglary that occurred in Westbury at 2:30 p.m. on June 20.

According to police, two unknown males knocked on the front door of an elderly homeowner on Hunter Lane in Westbury claiming to be utility workers needing to check the water lines in the house due to a gas leak. One subject, described as a white male between 40 and 49 years-old, stayed with the victim who was instructed to bang on the main water line, while the other subject, described as a white male 5’2”to 5’4” tall, with light skin and short straight black hair, approximately 35-40 years-old went upstairs. The victim was then asked to bang on another pipe, while both subjects fled. After the subjects left, the victim discovered that coins and cash had been stolen.
