Anton Media Group swept the Best Community Weekly Newspaper category at the annual Press Club of Long Island (PCLI) Media Awards dinner June 4, with The Manhasset Press taking first place, Garden City Life, second, and The Westbury Times, third. In addition, we received seven other awards.

The PCLI, a chapter of The Society of Professional Journalists, recognizes outstanding journalists on Long Island, and I’m proud our editors are named among them. They won for their articles, including: Betsy Abraham, who won third place in the Arts category for The Westbury Times; Christy Hinko and Dave Gil de Rubio, who won second place in the Health category for Long Island Weekly; Jennifer Fauci, editor of the Massapequa Observer, who won third place in the Health category and also third in the Home & Garden category; and former staffer John Owens who won third place in the Editorial/Commentary category for the Port Washington News. Our cartoonist Matt Bodkin won second place in that visual category for the Glen Cove Record and freelancer Cynthia Paulis won second place in the Profiles category for an article in the Massapequa Observer.

And while that is impressive enough, because of our relationships within our communities, we can also be proud of awards won by local students. The Hank Logeman High School Journalism Award went to Alanna Levine of Jericho High School, who with her journalism classmates, writes a weekly column for the Syosset-Jericho Tribune. Our editor-in-chief Liza N. Burby is also the faculty advisor to Adelphi University’s student newspaper The Delphian, so we’re pleased that her students won six awards, including the College Journalism Scholarship given to editor Victoria Chiesa of Hicksville and a complete female staff rout of the sports category. Liza also won third place in the Education Reporting category for a piece she wrote last year for LongIslandWins.com.

With these PCLI awards, Anton Media Group has received 26 awards this year, including those from the New York Press Association and the FOLIO awards. But while we’re pleased to be recognized by our peers for the work we do, it is the input we receive from our readers that is most important to us. Thank you for continuing to follow us weekly in print and online.
