Alzheimer’s Association To Host Early Stage Meetup Groups

The Alzheimer’s Association Long Island Chapter and FCA invite community members to take part in an Early Stage Meetup group every Thursday from 11 a.m. to noon, beginning March 12 through April 30 at the Salvation Army Hempstead Community Center.

This free support group offers people in the early stage of Alzheimer’s or another dementia creative activities and discussions that encourage disease education, social engagement, and cognitive stimulation in a supportive environment. A caregiver support group runs concurrently.

“The goal of the Early Stage Meetup is to process your diagnosis, develop coping strategies, and plan for the future while building a support system with others in the same boat,” said Kristin Murphy, LMSW, program specialist for the Alzheimer’s Association Long Island Chapter.

“Participation in this program can be an empowering step towards facing one’s journey with Alzheimer’s,” said Doug Davidson, executive director of the Alzheimer’s Association Long Island Chapter. “Our organization looks forward to working with the Salvation Army and FCA to continue to support the Hempstead community.”

Registration is required for this program. Call 800.272.3900 or visit to register.

Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in America. There are 5.7 million people nationwide, including 400,000 in New York, living with Alzheimer’s disease. More than one million New Yorkers provide unpaid, informal Alzheimer’s care. According to the 2019 Alzheimer’s Association Alzheimer’s Disease Facts & Figures Report, Alzheimer’s disease care in the United States will cost $290 billion this year alone.
