9/11 Patriot Day ObservancesSince 2001, thousands of families, neighbors and friends have gathered each year to honor the memories of their loved ones who perished in the attacks at the World Trade Center. On the third day following the attacks, President George W. Bush declared September 11 as Patriot Day, the National Day of Service and Remembrance, honoring the 2,977 people who lost their lives. Here are some of the local memorial services planned from Sept. 7 to Sept. 11.

Wednesday, Sept. 7

Tobay Beach
Town of Oyster Bay’s 9/11 Memorial Ceremony will be held on Tobay Beach on Ocean Parkway in Massapequa at 7 p.m. The event will include a candlelight vigil, vocal performances, bagpipe music and religious readings. In addition, the names of those lost, who are inscribed on the wall of the town’s memorial monument, will be read.

Thursday, Sept. 8

Eisenhower Park
9/11 Sunset Candlelight and Remembrance Ceremony at 6:30 p.m. at Eisenhower Park near Field 6. The ceremony will include the reading of names of Nassau County residents who lost their lives in the attacks, read by family members at Nassau County’s 9/11 Memorial. The memorial features two 30-foot semi-transparent aluminum towers to represent the World Trade Center towers and contains two pieces of steel recovered from the World Trade Center.

Sunday, Sept. 11

Point Lookout
Point Lookout September 11 Sunrise Memorial at 7:30 a.m. at Town Park at Point Lookout on Lido Boulevard, Point Lookout. The Town of Hempstead will host its annual September 11 Sunrise Memorial service. A new monument will be unveiled. Guests can participate in an interactive program. Call 516-812-3260 for details.

Manhasset
On Sept. 11, the Town of North Hempstead will hold a memorial service at 8 a.m. at Mary Jane Davies Green on Plandome Road in Manhasset across the street from town hall. This service is open to the public. During this memorial service, the North Hempstead community gathers to honor and recognize those who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks, including the 56 individuals from North Hempstead. The service will be open to the public. Call 516-869-7649 for information.

Floral Park
The Village of Floral Park will be remembering the lives that were lost on Sept. 11, 2001, at the relic memorial at village hall, 1 Floral Blvd. at 8:30 a.m. All are invited to attend.

Garden City
The Garden City Fire Department will commemorate the 15th anniversary of 9/11 by conducting a short service to remember those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The program will be held on Sunday, Sept. 11 at noon (with assembly beginning at 11:45 a.m.) on the village green (corner of Stewart and Hilton Avenues).

Wantagh
The Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church’s worship service (1845 Wantagh Ave.) will be held to remember the people who died in the September 11 attacks, to pray for the survivors and the victims’ families and to express hope for the present and future that there will never be another day like Sept. 11, 2001. All are welcome to worship on Sept. 11 at 10:30 a.m. Call 516-785-1829 for details.

Plainview
911_BA moving sculpture by Long Island artist David Haussler—dedicated to victims of the 9/11 terrorist attack—will be formally presented to the Plainview-Old Bethpage community at a ceremony on Sept. 11 at 4:30 p.m. in the Alma Craib Garden at the library (999 Old Country Rd.). The 10-foot outdoor sculpture incorporates a piece of steel from the World Trade Center site. The ceremony is open to everyone and anyone can donate to the project through GoFundMe.

Farmindgale
The Farmingdale United Methodist Church will honor emergency service workers and Good Samaritans at the 9:30 a.m. service on Sunday, Sept.11, the fifteenth anniversary of 9/11. The public is invited to join.

Long Beach
City Officials, clergy from the community and Long Beach Veterans will gather to take a moment to remember those lives lost on 9/11. The Remembrance Gathering will take place at 8 a.m. at the Recreation Center Parking Lot. At 7:30 p.m., the fire department will hold a ceremony on West Park Avenue at Lafayette Boulevard to pay tribute to the victims and honor the first responders.

Sayville
The Common Ground Memorial Service at Rotary Park (between Gillette and Candee Avenues) takes place Sept. 11 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Please bring a chair and umbrellas or raincoats in the event of rain. Scheduled to perform: Sean Barry — bagpipes; Rick Magnani — vocalist; Rachel White — vocalist; Saint Ann’s Choir; Gabriel Silva — musician; Twin Shores Chorus; Reverend Lawrence Chadwick from St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Bohemia; and candlelight labyrinth walk.

Holbrook
The Long Island Choral Society is Long Island’s oldest continually performing musical group. Established at Garden City’s “Cathedral of the Incarnation” in 1929, LICS has been under the baton of Meredith Elaine Baker since 1979. This performance will feature the Requiem Mass in D Minor (K.626) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, which was composed in Vienna in 1791 and left unfinished at the composer’s death. The program will continue with a selection of thematically uplifting and patriotic pieces to commemorate this somber date, 15 years past but forever etched into the memory of every American. Location: Community Room A&B of the Sachem Public Library, 150 Holbrook Rd., Holbrook, NY 11741.

Hauppauge
Enjoy the mellow voice of Stan Edwards as he and his trio sing the warm affectionate songs that Tony Bennett made famous in a commemorative show for 9/11 at the Hauppauge Public Library, 601 Veterans Memorial Highway, Hauppauge, NY 11788.
