PLANTING FIELDS FOUNDATION HOSTS CAMELLIA HOUSE 100TH BIRTHDAY & FESTIVAL, SUNDAY, FEB. 19
In 2017 Planting Fields’s extraordinary Camellia House is one hundred years old. Planting Fields Foundation raised $500,000 for its restoration which has just been completed in time for it’s one hundredth’s birthday party on Sunday, Feb. 19. The event, in cooperation with NYS office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation features a huge birthday cake which will be cut at 3 p.m. The Camellia House was designed by the well-known architects Guy Lowell and Andrew Sargent for Wiliam R. Coe who was a passionate collector and grower of rare camellias. The structure was built in 1917 by the pre-eminent greenhouse manufacturers of their day, the William H. Lutton Company of New Jersey.
Planting Fields welcomes visitors to our Camellia Festival on Sunday, March 19, from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. This year the fabulous camellia blooms of over 200 camellia shrubs and trees will be accompanied by wonderful live music by ALAN & HUGO, Brooklyn Flamenco Guitarists and Quatrain Barbershop Quartet. Entrance to the Park, Camellia House, Main Greenhouse and Hay Barn is free.
In Coe Hall ($10 per person, Members and children under 12 are free) children, enjoy children’s painting workshop, magic shows (1 p.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m.) and, of course, visit the Mad Hatter at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party with storytellers Jonathan Kruk & Andrew Sadler as the Queen of Hearts.
